| Tom Murphy, Jr. |
"I'm part of nearly 100 years of Irish
family builders," Coastal's CEO Tom Murphy, Jr. proudly comments.
Murphy was introduced to construction at an early age by his father,
Thomas P. Murphy Sr., who owned a general contracting business that
built mostly government and public projects around the state. At
age 19, Tom became Florida's youngest-ever licensed general contractor.
He started out as a laborer, then carpenter apprentice, journeyman
carpenter, foreman and finally contractor. At the age of 21, he
co-founded Seaboard Construction, Inc., and, as president, brought
the firm to a position on the ENR 400. After buying out his partners,
Murphy sold Seaboard in 1989 to one of the largest builders in the
world.
A short time later, Murphy formed Coastal Construction Company
with his brother John. Known for its work in the luxury residential
market, Coastal built and branched out into commercial construction
and multi-family developments based on the Murphy philosophy of
offering excellent quality construction, attention to detail and
client satisfaction. Today, Tom oversees the direction of all four
Coastal companies as their Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

After 20 years in the construction business, John decided to "retire"
in 1995, moving his family to Montana to enjoy the "Great Northwest"
and a less hectic pace than that of South Florida. Fortunately,
in 1998 we managed to convince him to return to South Florida and
head up our field operations.
"I am very pleased that John has agreed to expand his role
in our organization," said brother Tom. "He is my best
friend and is, without question, the best builder I ever met."
Prior to joining Tom in the construction business in 1975, John
cut his teeth in the business working for his father, Tom Murphy,
Sr., and serving four years in the United States Navy Seabees' construction
battalion.
