Tom Murphy, Jr.

"I'm part of nearly 100 years of Irish family builders," Coastal's CEO Tom Murphy, Jr. proudly comments. Murphy was introduced to construction at an early age by his father, Thomas P. Murphy Sr., who owned a general contracting business that built mostly government and public projects around the state. At age 19, Tom became Florida's youngest-ever licensed general contractor. He started out as a laborer, then carpenter apprentice, journeyman carpenter, foreman and finally contractor. At the age of 21, he co-founded Seaboard Construction, Inc., and, as president, brought the firm to a position on the ENR 400. After buying out his partners, Murphy sold Seaboard in 1989 to one of the largest builders in the world.

A short time later, Murphy formed Coastal Construction Company with his brother John. Known for its work in the luxury residential market, Coastal built and branched out into commercial construction and multi-family developments based on the Murphy philosophy of offering excellent quality construction, attention to detail and client satisfaction. Today, Tom oversees the direction of all four Coastal companies as their Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Dan Whiteman, Ph.D.

As President, Dan Whiteman leads Coastal's commercial and condominium companies. "Our goal is to utilize the extensive experience of our team members in commercial and multi-family construction by providing high-quality, cost-effective building solutions in a wide range of markets," Whiteman says.

A certified general contractor, Whiteman earned Bachelor's and Master's degree in building construction from the University of Florida. In addition, he has recently been awarded his Ph.D. in Design, Construction and Planning from the University of Florida. Dan has taught at the University of Florida, and is currently an Adjunct Professor at both the University of Miami and Florida International University. A member of Coastal's advisory board since 1992, he oversaw construction of the Oceania and Oceania Island developments in Miami Beach before joining Coastal full-time in 1997.

Whiteman was president of Associated General Contractors of Mid-Florida (1989-91) and was legislative chair for the same organization for eight years. He currently serves on the executive committee of the University of Florida's School of Building Construction Advisory Council.

Ken Alderman

Ken Alderman is the Chief Financial Officer and Secretary-Treasurer of Coastal. He is a certified public accountant with 31 years experience in the construction business.

Prior to joining Coastal, Alderman served as CFO and Senior Vice President for one of the nation’s oldest and largest builders. Alderman, who was looking to return “home,” holds a BSBA in Finance and Accounting from the University of Florida.

John Murphy

As Vice President of field operations, John is responsible for coordinating all field manpower between projects, monitoring of schedules and quality and keeping a close eye on safety and cleanliness of all job sites.

John and his brother Tom Murphy, Jr., co-founded Coastal Construction Company and have worked together their entire adult lives. John had directed all field operations of the company from its inception.

After 20 years in the construction business, John decided to "retire" in 1995, moving his family to Montana to enjoy the "Great Northwest" and a less hectic pace than that of South Florida. Fortunately, in 1998 we managed to convince him to return to South Florida and head up our field operations.

"I am very pleased that John has agreed to expand his role in our organization," said brother Tom. "He is my best friend and is, without question, the best builder I ever met."

Prior to joining Tom in the construction business in 1975, John cut his teeth in the business working for his father, Tom Murphy, Sr., and serving four years in the United States Navy Seabees' construction battalion.

Tom C. Murphy

Tom C. Murphy, a fifth-generation builder and Vice President of Pre-Construction Services concentrates on the development of new work. He joined the family business at the age of 14 and worked his way up the ladder from a non-skilled laborer to carpenter, foreman, estimator, project manager and chief estimator. While earning a Bachelor's degree in building construction from the University of Florida, he also studied architectural design. He is a certified general contractor, past Treasurer of the Builders Association and has earned a Master’s in Business at the University of Miami.

"Having the time and ability to work with the entire project team to design, price and contract great projects is what makes the pre-construction process so enjoyable" says Murphy. And he adds, "working with a great array of clients and projects introduces us to a vast dimension of products, examples and cost saving ideas that we can utilize on other projects. This gives us our competitive advantage."

Sean Murphy

Sean Murphy, also a fifth-generation builder, is Vice President of Construction Operations for all divisions of Coastal Construction Group. Sean oversees the planning and management of all Coastal projects, which include the construction of hotels, commercial buildings, private residences and condominiums. He is also Vice President of Coastal Homes and manages residential projects.

Murphy earned a Bachelor's degree in building construction from the University of Florida, and is a certified general contractor and a member of the National Home Builder Association. He began working in the family business at age 18 as a laborer and has worked his way up the ladder as a superintendent, project manager and project executive.

George Adornato

Vice President George Adornato heads up Coastal’s Palm Beach Office and oversees projects in this rapidly expanding market.

George has been involved in many high-end projects throughout the Southeastern United States including the Hearst Tower and Three First Union Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Metropolis Lofts and Post Riverside Corporate Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a graduate of Southern Poly Tech in Marietta, Georgia with a degree in Civil Engineering Technology.

Mike Murphy

As Vice President, Quality Assurance, Mike Murphy is responsible for ensuring that all Coastal projects adhere to the same quality standards the company is known for.

Born in Alexandria, Virginia, Mike, like Tom Jr. and John, began his career working in the family business formed by their fathers. Mike joined Tom and John at Coastal at the time the company was established.

Mark Swanson

As Vice President of Coastal Homes, Mark is responsible for both business development and construction management of the firm's residential projects.

Mark joined the Coastal team in 1998 as a project manager for one of the largest homes ever constructed in Palm Beach County. "With a total area in excess of 60,000 square feet, this home was a very complicated job and Mark's management style and ability to deal with all types of situations and people made it clear to us that his talents could better be utilized in a leadership role," Sean Murphy said.

Mark, a native of Binghampton, New York relocated to South Florida in 1979. He received his Associate of Science degree from State University of New York in Cobleskill, and has more than twenty years of experience in the construction industry.
